Housing
Coming soon

This policy aims to make sure the new homes being built meet our community’s needs, now and into the future, and deliver value for the public money behind them.
It focuses on genuine planning reform and on diversifying our housing supply, so that new development delivers on affordability, meets local need and makes better use of the homes we already have.
The key priorities:
Planning reform
Planning that serves our community
Value for public money
A significant amount of public money is going into meeting national housing targets, and the planning system has been changed to speed up development. The National Housing Accord targets 1.2 million new homes nationally over five years to June 2029, and Victoria’s Housing Statement commits to 800,000 new homes by 2034.
With so much public money enabling these developments, we need to make sure it delivers value for money, affordability and local need. I’ll push for genuine planning reform towards a system that delivers what the community needs, not what provides the biggest profit to developers.
Diversifying our housing stock
New homes to match our community
Better use of the homes we have
There is very little in either the Accord or the Housing Statement about how we make sure new builds better meet our needs, now and into the future. Without this, we risk duplicating the existing housing stock and missing the chance to diversify supply in a way that unlocks existing homes.
One and two person households make up over 58 per cent of private dwellings, while empty-nesters often struggle to find appropriate, cost effective down-sizing options. Our housing strategy needs to be more intentional about addressing these gaps.
I’ll push for a focus on diversifying the housing stock, and for the efficient allocation of existing housing to come first in our housing and planning strategies.
